This was my submission for SUM FLUX’s first ever competition THE WAFFLE HOUSE. The guidelines:
Theme: Waffle House
Genres: Literary fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, visual art welcome
Length: 2,000 words max
I have not been involved in many community events this year and this seemed like a good opportunity to push myself and get out of my comfort zone.
I went in thinking about a specific story but after a few hundred words I ended up scraping it. That’s when I thought about doing something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.
Tell a story through the use of receipts.
Felt like this was the time to do it and I enjoyed the experiment even though it required a bit more math than I typically like. Big thanks to Emil Ottoman for being my editor at large on this one.
I hope you enjoyed this helping of waffles. There are thirty-seven more courses to get through. I’m gonna eat more than my fill. See the full menu below:

THE BLACK DOT IN THE SKY FOLLOWS
A short horror story framed like neighborly message boards of Ring, Nextdoor, and countless other "communities" we've all encountered. Written for the “Eye See You” community Substack event hosted by Erica Drayton.
